Description

A brightly yellow bird flies gracefully between the delicate blossoms of a cherry tree, its branches tracing soft curves across the picture surface. The combination of gentle gray tones in the branches and the vivid colors of the blossoms and bird creates an appealing contrast full of springtime atmosphere.

This hanging scroll was executed in hand-painting on paper during the Heisei period, the jikusaki is made of wood. The hanging scroll is delivered in a matching wooden box, which ensures safe transport and easy-care storage.

The combination of songbird and cherry blossom is among the most popular motifs of Kachô-ga painting and represents spring, joie de vivre, and transience at once. Even as a comparatively young work, this hanging scroll impresses with its confident brushwork and is excellently suited for lovers of contemporary Japanese painting in the classical tradition.

Why does the date of creation sometimes not match the artist's dates

Because the two pieces of information speak about different things: the period designation describes the object – support, colors, condition – while the signature reflects which name appears on the painting. In most cases there is no attempt at deception behind this, but rather Japanese painting training: copying from workshop models was the curriculum for centuries, an utsushi is regarded as a bow to the teacher, workshops signed with the master's name, and artist names were passed down within a school. Such a hanging scroll is therefore not a forgery, but a hand-painted one-of-a-kind that continues the formal language of its school – just not the work of the famous name, and priced accordingly.
