Description
With a powerful, broad brushstroke, the artist places a gnarled pine next to delicate plum blossom branches – two motifs that have long stood in Japanese painting for permanence and the hope for a new spring. The ink tones shift between strong black and delicate gray, so that the needle clusters of the pine seem to float, while the plum blossoms are scattered across the branch in loose, dot-like touches.
The reduced, almost calligraphic execution recalls the freedom of Zen painting, in which a few confident strokes suffice to capture the structure and movement of a tree. A red artist's seal sets a colorful accent next to the concise signature and confirms the hand of the painter, whose confident brushwork suggests years of practice in handling brush and ink.
The hanging scroll is painted on paper and mounted in a shimmering silk border that further emphasizes the warm tone of the painting.
