Description

A raftsman wearing a straw hat propels his flat boat with a long pole through shallow water, while moss-covered rocks and clumps of grass crowd the shore. Behind them stands a farmstead whose massive thatched roof glows in a warm golden yellow, setting a strong contrast to the otherwise cool color mood of the picture.

Above the farmyard, cedars and deciduous trees layer upon each other, from which white banks of mist rise. Further up, several mountain ridges dissolve into ever paler tones of blue, until only flat, floating shapes remain. This finely graduated progression into nothingness is the true strength of the composition. The white bands of mist are not painted but left as untreated silk, which gives them their particular luminosity.

The interplay of cool blue-green in the distance and warm yellow at the center draws the eye reliably toward the farmstead, without any need for emphasis. Signature and red seal are placed in the lower right. Executed as a silkscreen print on silk, this hanging scroll unfolds a calm, pleasantly cool effect.
