Description
A small sparrow perches on a swaying stalk of grain, its gaze curiously turned to the side, surrounded by ripe panicles - a motif that captures the close connection between bird life and agricultural life in Japan. The fine, confident brushstrokes in the plumage stand in contrast to the loosely rendered stalks.
Sparrows are among the most popular motifs of Kachō-ga painting and were often depicted in autumn, when the rice harvest is underway and the small birds busy themselves in the fields. Such everyday scenes were considered a symbol of abundance and the natural cycle of the seasons.
