Description
Two sparrows, sitting close together on a rugged rocky outcrop, while below them a view opens onto a distant body of water – a motif of quiet, almost tender familiarity.
The plumage of the two birds is finely dotted in warm brown and beige tones, with the characteristic markings around the sparrows' heads and backs rendered with great care. The rocky ground is done in bolder, darker lines, lending the composition stability and structure. The positioning of the two animals, slightly offset from one another yet recognizable as a pair, creates a calm, balanced pictorial effect.
Sparrow motifs stand in the Japanese pictorial tradition for sociability and domestic happiness, and are well suited as friendly, unobtrusive wall decoration.
