Description

A wide river panorama opens up in delicate tones of blue and green, lined with blossoming cherry trees, a traditional village with red-tiled roofs, and a pagoda on the opposite bank. In the foreground, a willow tree sways in the wind, while an angler in his small boat waits patiently on the calm water.

This colorful spring landscape combines several classic motifs of East Asian painting – blossoming cherry trees, willow branches, and an inhabited riverbank – into an idyllic overall composition that captures the vitality and awakening of spring. A short line of calligraphy in the upper left gives the scene a poetic title.

The painting is done on paper, mounted with wooden rods, and dates from the Heisei period. With its rich color palette and detailed composition, this kakemono is a particularly vivid and decorative example of Japanese landscape painting.

Why does the date of creation sometimes not match the artist's dates

Because the two pieces of information speak about different things: the period designation describes the object – support, colors, condition – while the signature reflects which name appears on the painting. In most cases there is no attempt at deception behind this, but rather Japanese painting training: copying from workshop models was the curriculum for centuries, an utsushi is regarded as a bow to the teacher, workshops signed with the master's name, and artist names were passed down within a school. Such a hanging scroll is therefore not a forgery, but a hand-painted one-of-a-kind that continues the formal language of its school – just not the work of the famous name, and priced accordingly.
