Description
With a penetrating gaze and a flowing orange robe, Bodhidharma is depicted here, also known as Bodai-Daruma. According to legend, he is regarded as the first patriarch of Zen, or Chan Buddhism, who brought the teaching from India to China toward the end of the 5th century, thereby founding one of the most influential spiritual traditions of East Asia.
The distinctive earring, the strong contour lines, and the alert, almost stern facial expression follow the classical iconographic depiction of this figure, which in Japanese painting often serves as a symbol of willpower and meditation. Painted on silk, the work was created in the Shôwa period (1926–1989).
The jikusaki made of bone lends the classical mounting a refined touch. A meaningful kakemono for anyone interested in Buddhist iconography and the spiritual dimension of Japanese painting.
