Description
In this three-part set, classical motifs unfold in simple, powerful ink painting. The left panel shows a small bird on a blossoming plum branch, the center panel a single songbird high up on a thin, inclined bamboo branch, and the right panel a stooped old monk in deep meditation, accompanied by two small birds on the ground. The compositions radiate calm, concentration, and the close bond between man, animal, and plant – typical of the reduced, meditative aesthetic associated with Miyamoto Musashi.
The prints are based on famous works attributed to the legendary swordmaster, artist, and Zen practitioner Miyamoto Musashi (1584–1645). His ink paintings, often created in the tradition of Zen painting, are characterized by a sparing use of lines and ink that capture the spirit of things rather than depicting them in detail. Such motifs – birds on branches and contemplative figures – are among the most iconic examples of his hand and are still valued today as an expression of mindfulness and inner strength.
Printed on paper, the three narrow scrolls preserve the intense blackness of the original ink and the dynamic brushstrokes that stand for Musashi's style.
