Description
Two sparrows stand facing each other in tall grass, surrounded by scattered ears of grain - an unassuming, almost everyday scene captured with loose brushwork and warm earth tones. The slightly tilted head of one bird lends the composition an endearing, almost narrative quality.
Depictions of sparrow pairs are among the popular motifs of traditional bird-and-flower painting and often stand for conviviality and domestic happiness. The reduced, unadorned setting draws the eye entirely to the nature of the two small birds and the fine rendering of their plumage.
A shikishi is a firm, square mounting board traditionally used for painting and calligraphy.
