Description

A narrow wooden bridge crosses a rocky river in the lower part of the image, and on it a small figure balances a load over its shoulder. Behind it the slope rises, a narrow waterfall drops between dense trees, and further up lies a homestead with pale roofs above a natural stone wall.

The upper part of the image is occupied by a broad mountain range, whose ridges emerge from the mist only in outline. The contrast between the clearly rendered, lively foreground zone and the almost otherworldly mountain world above it creates that sense of vastness which East Asian landscape painting has always sought. The tiny figure on the bridge sets the scale and makes the grandeur of the scenery comprehensible in the first place. The pale roofs of the homestead form the only truly bright point at the center and inevitably draw the eye.

Executed as a screen print on silk, with signature and seal at the lower right, the hanging scroll follows entirely the tradition of Sansuiga, mountain-and-water painting. For lovers of classical, atmospherically dense ink landscapes, it is a distinctly evocative choice.
