Description
On a green hilltop stands a thatched-roof farmhouse, and in front of it a small figure carries two buckets on a shoulder pole down the slope. To the right, a narrow waterfall drops from a crevice in the rock, and in the foreground a turquoise river winds between moss-covered bank rocks, with a simple fish weir standing in it.
Above the scene, several mountain ridges rise in tiers, their contours growing paler toward the back until they dissolve entirely into haze. The contrast between the detailed, colorful riverside zone and the almost monochrome mountain backdrop gives the picture its depth. A single dark conifer on the left provides a strong vertical accent. The narrow path leading from the house to the riverbank connects the two halves of the picture and gives the scene its narrative coherence.
Everyday scenes like this, in which a person is shown performing a simple task, lend the grand landscape a human scale and warmth. Signature and red seal are found in the lower right. Executed as a silkscreen print on silk, this hanging scroll is a pleasant, well-balanced piece in terms of color.
