Description
Two scholars in blue and green robes stand on a narrow wooden bridge, looking out across the stream into the valley, where a small waterfall descends on the right. Above them, massive rock walls rise in layers, their ridges threaded with bands of mist, and halfway up, a pavilion with a curved roof nestles among sprawling pines.
The inscription in the upper left names the title of the painting Shōzan hakuun, White Clouds Over Pine Mountain, below which are two red seals. The pines are rendered with reddish-toned trunks and dense clusters of blue-green needles, drawing the eye in a gentle diagonal through the entire composition. The two figures on the bridge are deliberately kept small, making the rock walls above them appear all the more massive.
Motifs of this kind stem from the tradition of Chinese-influenced literati painting, in which the meeting of friends in a sublime mountain landscape stands for spiritual freedom and withdrawal from everyday life. Executed as a screen print on silk, this hanging scroll carries a calm, worldly-detached mood that fits well into quiet spaces.
