Description
With lowered gaze and a gentle facial expression, a young woman with a traditional hairstyle looks out from this shikishi - her elaborately arranged hair, adorned with golden kanzashi pins, reveals the high social aspiration of the depiction. The clear, finely drawn lines of the face stand in charming contrast to the soft folds of the blue kimono.
Bijinga, the art of depicting beautiful women, is one of the central themes of Japanese painting and places particular emphasis on the elegance of hairstyle, clothing, and facial expression. Small details such as the pattern and coloring of the kimono often reveal the season and social occasion of the person depicted.
