Description
With her hair elaborately arranged and adorned with a bright yellow chrysanthemum blossom, this young woman gazes out of the picture, her face turned slightly to the side. Her pink kimono is decorated with colorful maple leaves and blossoms, while the wide, gold-patterned obi provides a splendid accent of color.
Depictions of this kind belong to the tradition of bijinga, the painting of "beautiful women," which captures the elegance, fashion, and grace of its respective era. The carefully crafted hairstyle and the rich patterning of the robe testify to great painterly skill. Painted on silk and fitted with a jikusaki made of wood, this kakemono from the Shôwa period is a decorative homage to classical Japanese bijinga painting.
