Description
On fine silk sits a small, reddish-brown waxwing with a distinctive crest on a gently curving branch, while below, berry branches with scattered remnants of snow on the leaves underscore the wintry character of the motif. Delicate bamboo leaves in the background and the fine gradation of red and green tones lend the composition a calm, almost meditative mood, typical of bird-and-flower painting (Kachô-ga).
The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of the painter Suitou Kawafune and was created in the Shôwa period on silk, with the restrained color palette and carefully balanced composition attesting to great painterly confidence. The mounting with its gold-colored brocade border stylishly frames the picture field and underscores the festive, wintry character of the subject.
This unique work is excellently suited to creating a quiet, poetic atmosphere in the tokonoma during the cold season, and is at the same time an appealing example of traditional Japanese bird painting for collectors and connoisseurs.
