Description
Instead of an ordinary character, the calligrapher here captured the word "eye" (Japanese "moku") in an old, pictorial style that evokes the character's original form as an actual eye. From just a few expressive brushstrokes, a watchful eye literally emerges, seeming to gaze at the viewer and drawing them in immediately.
The brushwork is bold and immediate, with strong black areas and individual drip marks that lend the composition an almost modern, abstract quality. A red seal at the lower left confirms the authorship of this unusual interpretation of traditional calligraphic art, which makes ancient pictographs newly experienceable.
Executed on paper and framed in a plain, earth-brown mounting, this kakemono is in good condition. For lovers of experimental Japanese calligraphy that combines classical characters with pictorial power, this hanging scroll is a fascinating collector's item.
