Description
A delicate interplay of pink, lavender, and cream tones lies over this tea bowl, giving it a quiet, almost fragile appearance that is typical of Hagi ware – an effect that is further emphasized by fine crackle veins in the glaze.
Hagi-yaki is among the most highly regarded traditions of Japanese tea ceramics and has been associated for centuries with the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, the appreciation of the imperfect and the transient. Over time and through use, the fine-pored glaze of Hagi bowls increasingly changes – a process that connoisseurs call "nanabake," the sevenfold transformation, and hold in particular esteem.
This chawan was made by Koyo Hayashi, whose calm shaping gives the bowl a pleasant balance between delicacy and stability. It is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which protects the work appropriately.
