Description
Dark and of quiet depth, this chawan by Shoraku Sasaki presents itself, made in the classical Raku tradition. The glaze shows a fascinating interplay of black and red tones that condense on the surface into a fine, almost metallically shimmering relief. The characteristic Raku finish lends the piece an organic vitality and emphasizes the uniqueness of each individual firing.
The plain, harmonious form sits comfortably in the hand and reflects the calm, meditative attitude inherent in the Japanese tea ceremony. Small irregularities and nuances in the color gradient tell of the process of its creation – of fire, of chance, of the hand of the master.
