Description
A fine, net-like crackle runs through the cream-colored, subtly iridescent glaze of this oval-shaped tea bowl, lending it a calm, earthbound quality that is characteristic of traditional Seto ware.
In the making of Seto-yaki, different glaze recipes and firing techniques have come together for centuries, making the region one of the most important centers of Japanese ceramic art. The asymmetrical, slightly oval wall of this chawan, with its stable foot, corresponds to the aesthetic of the tea ceremony, in which handcrafted irregularities are valued as an expression of vitality.
The bowl was made by Jyotetsu Yamaguchi, whose calm shaping is reflected in the balanced silhouette of the chawan. It is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which protects the work properly and documents its provenance.
