Description
Painted on fine silk, this hanging scroll depicts a court beauty in an elaborately layered robe, of the kind once worn by the ladies of the Japanese imperial court. The long, loosely worn hair and the artfully draped folds of fabric follow the classical pictorial tradition of court painting.
Behind the figure, a flowering plum branch delicately opens, a motif that in Japan stands for approaching spring and endurance despite the cold. The fine lines of the face and the shimmering colors of the robe – purple, ochre, and a rich orange – attest to great painterly skill.
The work was created in the Shôwa period (1926–1989) and is mounted with a wooden jikusaki. An elegant, evocative hanging scroll for all who are enthusiastic about the traditional depiction of courtly elegance in Japanese painting.
