Description
At a wooden gate beneath a gnarled pine, an elegantly dressed figure pauses in the act of turning away – a quiet moment of parting, captured with reserved yet expressive brushwork. The vivid red of the robe stands out warmly against the muted architecture.
Genre scenes such as this, drawn from courtly or literary settings, belong to the popular pictorial themes of classical painting, capturing everyday yet emotionally charged moments. Created in the Shôwa period (1926–1989) on paper, the work impresses with its fine attention to detail in architecture and clothing.
The wooden jikusaki rounds off the classical mounting of the hanging scroll harmoniously. A narrative kakemono full of quiet poetry for lovers of traditional Japanese genre painting.
