Description
Against a sky rendered in gold and dark billowing clouds, a warrior figure with flowing hair, magnificent armor, and drawn sword stands upon a rocky outcrop. Far below, a dragon rises from the currents of a river, surrounded by spray and ascending clouds.
The scene recalls the famous legends of Japanese deities and warriors battling mighty serpent and dragon beings, combining heroic narrative art with elaborate gold-ground painting. An accompanying inscription in cursive calligraphy at the upper left complements the pictorial scene. The painting bears the signature of Yamamura Somon.
This kakemono comes in a signed wooden box and is painted on silk, mounted in dark red, floral-patterned brocade with wooden roller rods. A magnificent unique work from the Shôwa period for collectors of classical Japanese historical and legendary painting.
