Description
A thatched-roof house emerges midway from dense fog, surrounded by towering cedars whose crowns disappear into the haze. Below, a simple plank path leads across the stream, along which a small figure carrying a load on its shoulder is making its way. Darkly inked trees frame the scene on both edges and give it stability.
The entire picture is held in a warm, sepia-colored tone, out of which only a few areas are worked out with strong ink. The fog swallows up almost everything else, leaving the mountain ridges in the upper area recognizable only as flat, soft silhouettes. This strong reduction creates a decidedly quiet, introspective pictorial mood. The tall cedars behind the house are only recognizable as pale silhouettes, hinting at the depth of the valley.
Such misty scenes with solitary farmsteads are among the most popular subjects of Japanese landscape painting and stand for seclusion and harmony with nature. Signature and red seal appear at the lower right. As a silkscreen print on silk, this hanging scroll is a understated choice for quiet rooms.
