Description
A deep, iridescent red defines the appearance of this sake cup, transitioning toward the rim into a sandy beige, where the raw body remains visible beneath the glaze – a gradient created entirely by the firing process, varying anew each time.
The cup comes from the Mashiko tradition, a pottery region north of Tokyo that gained nationwide recognition in the 20th century, above all through the Mingei movement, the appreciation of unpretentious utilitarian craft. Characteristic of Mashiko-yaki are strong, warm glaze tones and a deliberately unassuming form dedicated to the material.
This guinomi is signed by Bunsho Nakamura (中村文昌), whose hand is evident in the compact, grounded form of the cup. It is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, offering the piece a secure and stylish place of storage.
