Description
Entirely without glaze, this bottle vase unfolds the full effect of the fired clay: at the narrow, elongated neck, a warm, finely speckled beige-brown appears, transitioning downward into a rich, earthy dark brown. This natural color gradient develops during the days-long wood firing, in which ash and flames act directly on the unglazed surface, making each piece a unique work.
The bulbous form with the slender neck is typical of Bizen ware, whose roots reach back more than a thousand years in the Okayama region. Unlike many other Japanese ceramic traditions, Bizen-yaki dispenses entirely with glaze and painting – the entire aesthetic effect arises solely from the interplay of clay, fire, and time. It is precisely this reduction that makes Bizen vases especially authentic testaments to Japanese fired ceramics.
The vase is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter. With its earthy presence and warm, shimmering surface, this Bizen vase blends harmoniously into a wide variety of living styles while also telling the story of one of Japan's oldest ceramic traditions.
