Description
Warm tones of red and brown merge with darker areas that shimmer almost black on this bulbous vase made of Tanba ware. The iridescent surface results from the natural ash glaze formed during the long wood firing, which gives each piece an entirely unique, unrepeatable coloration.
Tanba is one of Japan's six old pottery towns and looks back on a history of more than 800 years. The simple, organically rounded form of this vase with its slender neck is exemplary of the understated yet characterful aesthetic of the Tanba tradition.
This vase is the work of Ichino Hiroyuki and comes in a wooden box signed by the master potter. As a handcrafted unique work, it is both a functional vessel and an impressive collector's piece of Japanese ceramic art.
