Description
Fine gold lines and elaborately painted chrysanthemum blossoms in white and yellow adorn this ivory-colored vase made of Satsuma ware, whose fine crackle in the glaze lends it an additional, almost precious texture. The gold-rimmed spout stylishly rounds off the artful appearance.
Satsuma ware originated in the 16th century in Satsuma Province and later became famous above all for export to Europe and America, where its elaborate, often gold-decorated painting was considered the epitome of Japanese craftsmanship. The chrysanthemum blossom itself is regarded in Japan as an imperial symbol of longevity and perfection.
