Description
The rough, mineral-flecked body of this sake cup reveals at first glance its origin in Shigaraki, one of the oldest pottery regions of Japan, whose clay is rich in coarse feldspar and quartz inclusions.
Firing in a wood-burning kiln produces the strong red and brown tones entirely without glaze, solely through the effect of flame and ash on the clay. The small white specks that become visible on the surface are a typical characteristic of genuine Shigaraki ware.
With its earthy, unadulterated character, this cup is a fine example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and is suited both for everyday use and as a collector's item.
