Description
The complete text of the Heart Sutra (Hannya Shingyo) runs across this kakemono in fine, even characters – a calligraphy whose calm and precision immediately convey the meditative concentration of the writing process. Red seals set a chromatic accent against the black ink at the end of the columns of text.
As one of the central texts of Mahayana Buddhism, the Heart Sutra is traditionally copied by hand in Japan to bring mind and hand into harmony – a practice known as Shakyo. The wooden ends of the roller rods underscore the restrained, elegant, unobtrusive character of this kakemono from the Shôwa period (1926–1989).
This calligraphy comes in a wooden box suitable for both storage and transport.
