Description
Carved from an old, already heavily worn wooden beam that presumably once belonged to a temple complex, this guardian lion is more than a mere decorative object – it visibly carries the traces of its origin within itself. With its wide-open mouth, in which a movable ring is carved, and its alert, focused gaze, the figure embodies the traditional role of guardian lions, which have been placed in front of temple entrances in Japan and China for centuries to ward off evil spirits and harmful influences.
These lions typically appear in pairs, with the male lion, as depicted here, traditionally holding a ball beneath its paw, while its female counterpart protects a cub. The powerful, muscular design with its flame-like flowing mane and finely carved fur attests to a high degree of carving skill and a confident sense of expression and movement.
This figure from the Shôwa period combines craftsmanship precision with the centuries-old symbolism of the Japanese guardian lions and, through its presumed origin from a historical temple building, is a particularly authentic collector's piece of Japanese wood carving art.
