Description

Gently hand-applied gold accents run across the shoulders of this vase, on which a pair of mandarin ducks is depicted beneath a gnarled, blossoming plum tree. The strong red and green tones of the blossoms and leaves contrast effectively with the creamy white ground and the deep blue band of color at the foot of the vase.

In Japanese symbolism, mandarin ducks are considered a symbol of a happy, faithful partnership, while the plum tree, as one of the first flowering trees of spring, stands for hope and renewal. Made of Kutani porcelain, this vase combines skillful hand-painting with the attention to detail typical of this tradition. The piece dates from the Heisei period and displays a finely graduated, slightly crackled glaze.

The vase is delivered in a decorative wooden box signed by the master, which serves for safekeeping. Its harmonious motif and careful execution make it an impressive gift for lovers of Japanese porcelain art or a stylish accent in one's own home.
