Description
As if peeled from dense mist, softly drawn mountain peaks rise in the background, while in the foreground a boat glides alone over calm water. Bare trees on the shore and a rocky slope with dark ink dots suggest a cool, autumnal or wintry mood. In the upper right, a multi-line poem with signature and red seal completes the quiet, almost floating composition.
This kind of atmospheric landscape painting stands in the tradition of Chinese-influenced literati painting, in which the point is less the exact depiction of a place than the conveying of mood and inner expanse. The restrained color palette of earthy brown tones further reinforces the contemplative character of the image. Created in the Meiji period on paper, the hanging scroll is bordered by a plain brown mounting and mounted on a wooden rod.
For lovers of quiet, poetic landscape painting, this kakemono is a particularly fitting choice, lending any room a meditative, Far Eastern-inspired expanse.
