Description
Behind the softly curving leaves of a branch, a narrow crescent moon pushes into the picture, surrounded by delicate haze that makes the nocturnal stillness almost tangible. The reduced palette of muted gray and beige tones reinforces the calm, contemplative atmosphere of this quiet night scene.
The Mondschein is painted on paper and bears the signature and seal of Kaho Nakajima from the Shôwa period. The moon is one of the central motifs of Japanese poetry and painting, where it has stood for centuries for transience, longing, and the quiet beauty of nature.
The axis of the hanging scroll is fitted with wooden fittings. With its reduced, poetic visual language, this work invites quiet contemplation and is especially well suited to a setting that seeks to express Japanese aesthetics and an appreciation for still, seasonally marked moments in nature.
