Description
Rugged and massive, a dark mountain range rises on this kakemono against a warm, golden-yellow sky, in which a small, boldly painted red sun sets the only contrast in color. At the foot of the mountains stretches a dense pine forest, its silhouettes rendered in fine, almost calligraphic brushstrokes.
The reduced, powerful pictorial language evokes the morning hours in the high mountains, when the first rays of sun reach the peaks, and conveys a mood of sublimity and stillness. Such motifs were often chosen to lend a room a calm, meditative atmosphere.
Painted on silk, with a jikusaki made of bone, this hand-painted unique work dates from the Shôwa period. This kakemono comes in a wooden box (tomobako) and is an impressive choice for anyone drawn to the quiet power of Japanese mountain landscapes.
