Description
On a projecting rock sits a pavilion with a green-tiled roof, in which a scholar in a green robe has taken a seat at the balustrade, gazing into the valley. Below, a second roof, tiled in blue, emerges from the slope, while on the left a wide-spreading pine stretches its branches into the center of the composition.
In the lower section, a narrow, multi-tiered waterfall cascades over boulders and flows out into a calm stream. The coloring is unusually fresh: strong, clearly distinct shades of green for foliage and moss, combined with warm ocher for the rock flanks. The fine, even stippling of the foliage reveals the trained hand of the Chinese-influenced school of painting. The small tiers of the waterfall are individually rendered, so that the course of the water can be followed across the entire height of the image.
The scholar seated in seclusion in the mountains belongs to the core repertoire of literati painting and embodies the ideal of a life removed from the bustle of court affairs. Signature and red seal are placed at the lower right, with a further seal at the upper right. Executed as a screen print, this hanging scroll is a colorful, summery eye-catcher.
