Description
In quiet gray-brown tones, this river landscape extends across several pictorial planes, from rugged rock formations in the background to a small fishing boat drifting near the shore between willows and houses.
The dense calligraphic inscription at the top edge of the picture, with two red seals, points to a scholarly origin of the motif, while the painter brings the texture of rock and vegetation to life with loosely applied, partly dry brushstrokes. Created in the Shôwa period, the work is painted on paper.
River landscapes with fishing boats are among the classic themes of Sansui painting and stand symbolically for a secluded life lived in harmony with nature. With its calm visual language, this kakemono appeals especially to lovers of traditional ink painting.
