Description

Steeply rising, deeply rugged rock formations characterize this mountain landscape, at the foot of which a small village with thatched-roof houses crouches among trees – a striking contrast between the force of the rock and the fragility of human dwelling.

A calligraphic inscription with a red seal at the top edge of the picture lends the composition additional literary depth, while the painter works out the volume of the rocks in plastic relief with dense, layered brushstrokes. Created in the Meiji period on silk, the scroll has jikusaki ends made of wood.

Such dramatic mountain depictions stand in the tradition of Chinese-influenced literati painting and were valued for offering the viewer a moment of contemplation amid wild, untouched nature. This kakemono captivates with its powerful, almost tangible pictorial force.

Why does the date of creation sometimes not match the artist's dates

Because the two pieces of information speak about different things: the period designation describes the object – support, colors, condition – while the signature reflects which name appears on the painting. In most cases there is no attempt at deception behind this, but rather Japanese painting training: copying from workshop models was the curriculum for centuries, an utsushi is regarded as a bow to the teacher, workshops signed with the master's name, and artist names were passed down within a school. Such a hanging scroll is therefore not a forgery, but a hand-painted one-of-a-kind that continues the formal language of its school – just not the work of the famous name, and priced accordingly.
