Description
Full of lightness and movement, this hanging scroll shows a sparrow with outstretched wings flying toward a blossoming cherry branch. The delicate white and pink blossoms, along with the dark red young leaves of the tree, form a vivid color contrast to the warm gold tone of the background and lend the composition a buoyant, almost spring-like cheerfulness.
The moment of flight, captured with a few precise brushstrokes for the plumage and flight feathers, reveals the artist's keen powers of observation for the movements of nature. The combination of sparrow and cherry blossom is a popular motif in kachô-ga painting and stands for the carefree joy of awakening spring.
