Description
Two sparrows, one in flight with wings spread wide, the other resting on a moss-covered stone, animate this kakemono, whose center is occupied by lushly blooming white flowers and dense foliage. The juxtaposition of movement and stillness – the bird taking flight and the perched bird – lends the composition a pleasing tension, while the restrained color palette of warm ochre tones and dark leaf green creates an autumnal, contemplative mood.
The painting is executed on silk, with fine brushwork for the birds' plumage and broader washes for the leaves. It was created in the Shôwa period and shows the return to classical themes of bird-and-flower painting typical of this period. The scroll mounting concludes with jikusaki ends made of wood.
As wall decoration in the tokonoma or as a natural, unobtrusive eye-catcher in a bright room, this kakemono unfolds its calm yet lively effect and brings a piece of Japanese garden idyll into the home.
