Description
Two small sparrows with rust-red head plumage flit about the branches of a rowan tree, whose feathery leaves have turned reddish with autumn color. While one bird pauses in flight, the other pecks attentively at the bright red clusters of berries hanging densely from the branches.
The warm golden tone of the picture ground makes the red berries and the rust-brown plumage of the birds stand out especially vividly, lending the scene a cheerful, autumnal mood. Rowan berries and sparrows are among the classic motifs of Japanese bird-and-flower painting and stand for the abundance of the harvest season.
Painted on silk and mounted in shimmering, gold-colored fabric with a floral scroll pattern, with roller rods made of plastic, this kakemono dates from the Shôwa period. The painter's signature and seal are found in the lower left corner of this finely painted unique work.
