Description
Against a vivid red, rising sun, two small birds pass over gently rolling waves – a quiet, almost poetic scene that captures the dawn of a new day. The warm orange and yellow tones of the sky blend softly into one another, lending the composition a luminous quality despite its reduced pictorial elements.
The hanging scroll is painted on silk and bears the signature and seal of Otake Kunikan from the Shôwa period. In Japan, the rising sun has long been regarded as a symbol of new beginnings and hope, while small birds in flight often stand for freedom and lightness.
The axis of the hanging scroll is fitted with wooden hardware. With its clear, meditative pictorial language, this composition is particularly well suited for hanging in the tokonoma at the turn of the year or as a symbol of a new beginning. An evocative work for collectors of classical Japanese landscape and bird painting.
