Description
Between wooded slopes rises a multistory pagoda, surrounded by lushly blooming trees and traditional buildings that nestle against the mountain. The warm, earthy color palette and the dense vegetation lend the scene the abundance and warmth of the summer months.
This kakemono belongs to a depiction of the four seasons, in which each image captures its own landscape mood. For Summer, the painter chose a lively temple landscape with blooming vegetation that speaks of abundance and growth, rather than the sparse stillness of winter or autumn. The scene is painted on silk, whose fine surface lends the warm color tones additional depth.
The jikusaki at the ends of the roller rods is made of wood. For collectors interested in Japanese landscape painting and the depiction of the seasons, this kakemono is an evocative addition.
