Description
The faceted, almost square shape of this sake flask reveals the practiced hand of an experienced Bizen potter – angular lines alternate with gently curved transitions, lending the piece a sculptural presence.
The flask was made by master potter Harada Totsuki, who uses the characteristic Bizen firing technique: entirely without glaze, the strong red and brown tones arise solely from the long firing time in the wood-fired kiln and the direct contact with flame and ash.
The result is a unique work with a warm, earthy character, suited both as a vessel for the traditional sake culture and as an independent collector's piece of Japanese ceramic art.
