Description
Unglazed and relying entirely on the natural effect of clay and fire, this Tokkuri Made of Bizen Ware by Akira Nakao shows an impressive interplay of warm red and brown tones with darker, almost metallic shimmering shades. This variety of color arises during the days-long wood firing through ash deposits and shifting temperatures in the kiln – a process that can never be predicted exactly.
As one of the six old pottery towns of Japan, Bizen still enjoys the highest esteem among ceramics lovers today, precisely because the deliberate absence of glaze turns every piece into a true unique work. This tokkuri comes from Nakao Akira and is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter. As a handcrafted unique work, it is excellently suited for warming and serving sake and is an impressive collector's piece of traditional Japanese pottery.
