Description

Two narrow waterfalls cascade in fine, almost transparent lines over dark rock ledges, while brilliant orange and red maple leaves form the autumnal frame of this motif. The contrast between the restrained ink painting of the water and the coloring of the foliage constitutes the special appeal of this kakemono.

Waterfalls in combination with autumn maple leaves are among the classic motifs of Japanese landscape painting, capturing the transience of the seasons and the beauty of nature. The fine, calligraphic line work of the falling water creates both movement and stillness.

The painting is done on paper, mounted with wooden rods, and dates from the Shôwa period. A small seal at the lower edge of the picture completes the composition. This kakemono is an evocative example of autumnal Japanese landscape painting and a beautiful accent for any room.

Why does the date of creation sometimes not match the artist's dates

Because the two pieces of information speak about different things: the period designation describes the object – support, colors, condition – while the signature reflects which name appears on the painting. In most cases there is no attempt at deception behind this, but rather Japanese painting training: copying from workshop models was the curriculum for centuries, an utsushi is regarded as a bow to the teacher, workshops signed with the master's name, and artist names were passed down within a school. Such a hanging scroll is therefore not a forgery, but a hand-painted one-of-a-kind that continues the formal language of its school – just not the work of the famous name, and priced accordingly.
