Description
This hanging scroll dates from the Meiji period and shows an elegant young woman from behind, her elaborately arranged hair adorned with a floral hair ornament. In her raised hand she holds a long object, while she turns toward a large object rendered in ink, its surface bearing sweeping calligraphic characters.
Depictions of beautiful women, so-called bijin-ga, are among the most popular motifs in Japanese painting, celebrating elegance, grace, and the elaborate dress of their respective era. The view from behind, a frequently chosen compositional device, lends the scene a particular reticence and invites the viewer to imagine the face of the depicted figure for themselves.
