Description

A tea bowl of Kutani porcelain, whose earthy brown glaze is adorned with a blossom featuring relief-like raised white petals and dark leaves – a decor of great sculptural effect.

This Chawan comes from Hakusen Kutani.

The white petals stand out distinctly from the grainy, matte-shimmering base glaze through their raised, almost enamel-like structure, while fine gold outlines further emphasize the individual shapes. This combination of relief-like ornamentation and muted earth glaze is typical of the decorative Kutani tradition, which, alongside the better-known colorful Kutani porcelains, has also produced more restrained, texturally appealing variants.

The bowl comes in a wooden box signed by the master potter and is thus suitable both for the tea ceremony and as a standalone collector's piece.
