Description
Without any glaze, shaped solely by the interplay of clay, fire and ash, this guinomi displays the earthy brown tones so characteristic of Bizen ware. Fine light lines and speckles on the surface result from applied straw or from direct contact with the kiln wall during the often days-long wood firing – each marking is a direct testament to the firing process.
Bizen-yaki is among the oldest unglazed ceramics traditions of Japan and has been practiced in the Okayama region for over a thousand years. Characteristic is the absence of any painted decoration – the effect arises solely from material and fire. This sake cup bears the stamp of the potter Namba Sojo and has a slightly angular, hand-formed silhouette that sits comfortably in the hand.
The guinomi is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which preserves the piece with dignity. For lovers of archaic, reduced Japanese ceramics, this Bizen guinomi is a particularly authentic piece that makes the original power of the earth tangible.
