Description

Fine crackle covers the creamy white glaze of this small sake cup, revealing on closer inspection the gently iridescent surface typical of Hagi-yaki. The porous body of the Hagi ware absorbs moisture over the course of use, causing the color and luster of the glaze to gradually change – a phenomenon especially prized by tea lovers, which lends the guinomi a character all its own over the years.

The slightly irregular, hand-formed wall with its narrow, clearly defined foot shows the free, undogmatic formal language for which Hagi ware has long been valued. This sake cup was made by Seigan Yamane, whose calm yet lively hand is reflected in the balance between delicacy and stability of form.

The small guinomi comes in a wooden box signed by the artist and was created in the Heisei period. Whether as a drinking vessel for sake on special occasions or as a delicate collector's piece of Japanese ceramic art – this piece combines traditional craftsmanship with quiet elegance.
