Description

In warm earth tones and with an irregularly shaped body, this guinomi speaks to the raw, elemental aesthetic of Tanba ware. The rough, unsmoothed surface with its natural fire marks and shifting brown and rust tones is created in the wood-fired kiln, where ash and flame shape the glaze unpredictably – no two pieces are alike. The slightly oval rim and the tactile body make this small sake cup a unique work with a clearly perceptible hand of the potter.

The cup bears the stamp of Tanba master Masafumi Onishi, who works within this over 800-year-old firing tradition of the Tanba-Sasayama region. Characteristic of Tanba-yaki is the absence of elaborate painting in favor of the pure effect of clay, fire, and ash – a philosophy that is directly evident in this guinomi. Inside, the glaze shimmers in a deep reddish brown, forming an appealing contrast to the earthy exterior.

The piece is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, suitable both for careful storage and for display as a small collector's item. Whether for the traditional enjoyment of sake or as a standalone piece of ceramics in a display case: this guinomi combines craftsmanship depth with the quiet beauty of Japanese wood-fired pottery.
